The Danakil Depression, straddling Ethiopia and Eritrea, is a place where three tectonic plates converge in a land of volcanoes, salt lakes, and otherworldly rock formations. The few inhabitants who live in the region rely on salt mining to get by. The unwelcoming landscape is one of the most captivating you’ll ever see.
If you’re interested in visiting, don’t travel here alone; escorts or tour groups familiar with the territory are highly recommended.

Tour Plan
Start your 3 Days Danakil Depression Tour with an early morning departure from Mekelle, heading toward Dodom, the base of the famous Erta Ale volcano. The 70 km drive takes approximately 5 hours along a challenging and rugged road, providing stunning views of Ethiopia’s dramatic landscapes. After breakfast in Dodom, continue to the foot of Erta Ale, where a 3-hour trek leads to the volcano summit.
Erta Ale, at 613 meters, is home to the world’s only permanent lava lake, making it a must-see on your Danakil Depression tour. The evening ascent begins at 8 PM, with camels transporting camping supplies to the rim. Camp overnight at the volcano’s edge, where you’ll witness the mesmerizing, ever-active boiling lava lake—an awe-inspiring natural wonder.

The second day of your 3 Days Danakil Depression Tour begins with an early wake-up to catch the sunrise at Erta Ale. After a hearty breakfast, descend back to Dodom, arriving by 8:00 AM. Relax and enjoy the morning before continuing your journey to HamadEla, a village located 100 km from Dodom. Along the way, enjoy a picnic lunch beneath palm trees.
Arriving in HamadEla by 4:30 PM, explore the village, home to around 500 people. Experience the local culture and the iconic camel caravans. In the evening, head to Lake Assale, a shallow salt lake, and enjoy the incredible sunset views that define the Danakil Depression tour experience.

On the final day of your 3 Days Danakil Depression Tour, venture out to the Dallol region, one of the most surreal places on Earth. Begin with a visit to Ragad (Asebo), where locals mine salt in one of the hottest regions of the world. Watch as workers break the salt into blocks and load them onto camel caravans—a centuries-old practice in the Danakil Depression.
Next, explore Dallol’s incredible landscapes formed by volcanic activity. The colorful hydrothermal fields, salt formations, and surreal salt canyons will leave you speechless. Visit Lake Assale to see the salt flats before returning to HamadEla for lunch.
In the afternoon, drive back to Mekelle, concluding your epic 3 Days Danakil Depression Tour.
